Cameraman recalls Mister Rogers' earliest children's television days
We were fortunate to talk with Joel Dulberg about his experience working with Mister Rogers in the earliest days of Fred Rogers' television career. Joel was just a kid when he applied for his first television job in Pittsburgh, PA. He was assigned to work on an upstart television program - WQED's Children's Corner (1955 - 1961) - that was being developed by Fred Rogers and Josie Carey.
Of the experience of producing this piece, Kurt wrote;
I meet Joel a few years ago. I couldn't believe that this man—who was living on an island in Maine—was one of the first camera operators who worked on Fred Roger's first show (WQED’s The Children's Corner). The rest of his career, which we don’t get to here, is also amazing. He worked for 60 Minutes when it first started, he was one of the first cameraman for the New York Mets, and he is good friends with Mr. McFeely (David Newell). He is an incredible person with an incredible career.
Some of our favorite Mister Rogers quotes
"The media shows the tiniest percentage of what people do. There are millions and millions of people doing wonderful things all over the world, and they're generally not the ones being touted in the news."
"The greatest gift you ever give is your honest self."
"Love is like infinity: You can't have more or less infinity, and you can't compare two things to see if they're 'equally infinite.' Infinity just is, and that's the way I think love is, too."
"It's not the honors and the prizes and the fancy outsides of life which ultimately nourish our souls. It's the knowing that we can be trusted, that we never have to fear the truth, that the bedrock of our very being is good stuff."
"As human beings, our job in life is to help people realize how rare and valuable each one of us really is, that each of us has something that no one else has- or ever will have- something inside that is unique to all time. It's our job to encourage each other to discover that uniqueness and to provide ways of developing its expression."
"You rarely have time for everything you want in this life, so you need to make choices. And hopefully, your choices can come from a deep sense of who you are."
