SUNDIAL DIARIES

Pandemic Life with Thomas

What are the Sundial Diaries?

Q: What is something GOOD that has come out of this pandemic for you?

The pandemic has been a rollercoaster since the beginning, My wife gave birth to our second daughter during the peak of the first wave in April 2020. That experience was one of the toughest challenges we’ve faced as a family. The silver lining was the ability to be home and be present with my girls for an extended period of time. Spending quality time with them at this age is something I would never take for granted and am grateful for.

Q: What is one thing you would have done in 2019 had you known we were about to enter a pandemic in 2020?

One thing I would have done in 2019 if I had known the pandemic was around the corner was invested in Amazon stock. We basically have them on speed dial at this point.

Q: Where will your next vacation be once it’s safe to travel again?

We have a camp on Schoodic Lake in Brownville and have been able to go safely over the course of 2020. Even when life gets back to normal, there’s no place I would rather be than by the fire pit, whiskey and cigar in hand with friends and family.

Q: What are your favorite projects from this past year, and what role did you play in them?

Growing up in Falmouth I had a strong connection to the ocean and spent the majority of my summers in, on or around Casco Bay. We were given an opportunity to work with Friends of Casco Bay and wrapped a project with them in early 2020. This project hit home for me and was great to work with a group of people that have the same appreciation for the water as I do. I directed, co-shot and was the drone operator for this piece.

Q: What kind of work would you like to do more of in 2021?

I’m looking forward to getting out into Maine and shooting more aerial footage with our drone. We have such a beautiful state and it’s hard not capture great footage from the sky every time I fly.

Q: What’s one non-KF video that you’re digging right now?

The production value of this video and the time and coordination it must have taken to produce/ create is mind blowing to me. It might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it brings out the kid in me and takes me back to a time before responsibilities and mortgages.

Q: Whatever your holiday may look like, if you’re buying gifts, it’s definitely important to support local this year.  Please share your favorite Maine artisan.

My good friend started a local side business Maine Laser Design that I help out with from time to time. It’s a create way to be creative and get away from the day to day grind. Not to mention they have created some really great things along they way. It’s still early in their journey but I am looking forward to what 2021 has in store for them.

Q: Do you have a particular favorite product, either from that artisan or another?

This is a custom wall art sign they created for bee keeper in Kentucky. Each layer was lasered individually then layered creating a really cool piece for the client to hang in their workshop.

Q: What are you most looking forward to this holiday season?

My brother Lives in Tampa and only gets up north a few times a year, so I look forward to seeing him during Christmas. I know my girls are very excited to see their Uncle Matt and what treasures he might bring with him from a certain princess castle down near where he lives.
